Going to shanghai? Hi, i will be going to shanghai next tuesday. It will be a 2 week trip. can you give me some suggestions? 1. where to visit (places of interest, somewhere i can experience 夜上海, etc.) 2. what and where to eat good food. (i heard there is a place that sells very delicious xie huang xiao long bao?) 3. where to do my shopping? (those places that you can bargin and those big and establish malls that you can't) 4. spa and facial? btw, do most of them speak shanghainese or mandarin? Do they speak english? I have heard some negative comment about shanghainese being snobbish too. Just wondering if it's true? (I do not mean to offend) Thanks in advance! <3

Aidant replied: "I can help a bit. Shanghai is great for nightlife, just get a travel guide and it'll tell you all the current hotspots. Shanghainese is less common than, say, 5 years ago - you'll hear more mandarin but also some English so don't worry. Just get a guide to Shanghai - it'll have the shopping and going out places and the characters to show taxi drivers."

EvilSouffle replied: "1. People's Square (lots of nightlife), Yu Garden, Qibao Road, Nanjing Road (absolutely gorgeous at night!), Huaihai Road, underground mall in the Xujiahui subway station 2. Qibao Road has some of the best tasting food I've ever had and it's cheap! For more upper class dining I would suggest hitting Hengshan Road or one of the malls in People Square. South Beauty and DainTi Hill are both excellent restaurants. The food courts in the malls also aren't too bad. The outdoor food stalls also have a great selection of grilled goodies! In Nanjing Road there is a giant snack store (forgot what it's called, but you'll know it when you see it) that sells various assortments of candies, dried fruit, cakes, jerkies, etc. 3. There are lots of little shops all over People's Square and in Xujiahui where you can barter. Qibao is also good, but only for like novelty souvenirs, and the prices the store owners ask for are really cheap. If you go to Yu Garden I don't recommend buying anything there since it's a popular tourist destination and the store owners jack up the price accordingly. Xujiahui, People's Square, Nanjing and Huaihai Road have those big malls full of pricey high end stores. The malls are pretty and fun to hang around in but everything sold in there costs twice as much as it would in the US so it's not really worth it to buy anything. 4. For spas and facials I recommend going to Hengshan Road and finding one since that's an area that typically caters to foreigners the quality of the service you're recieving is going to be better. Don't go somewhere that offers really cheap prices and looks dinky because the Chinese have a bad habit of cutting costs by cutting out quality. Some of them speak Shanghainese, but almost all of them can speak mandarin. The only places you're really going to encounter people that can speak english are in really touristy or western areas/shops or in some upper class establishments, and even then their english is going to be severely limited. The Shanghainese are pretty snobbish and tend to hold themselves above Chinese people from other cities. Ask any non Shanghainese chinese person and they can confirm this lol."
