Absinthe Liquor Store Facts in Q&A
Has anyone seen a liquor store in Los Angeles selling Absinthe? Now that it's legal, I've seen brands like Kubler and Lucid in bars and available on-line, but I'd like to purchase a bottle from a liquor store for a Christmas present.

sunybuni replied: "Try to find a BevMo. Beverages and More - they have all kinds of liquours."

Leonid replied: "I think you won't find it in America. It is forbidden in whole Europe to sell and I don't think America is the exeption. You can buy it only in Chech or Russia. May be laws changed but few years ago it was so"

Likeitornot replied: "Absinthe that is legal today is not the same as it was in the 19th century. It was made from the Wormwood plant and drinking it affected the central nervous system. The modern day replacement is "Ecstasy" or the "date-rape" drug. Today's manufacturers of Absinthe do use advertising and labelling that is reminiscent of the old Absinthe which was used (with sugar cubes) to help young ladies lose their virtue."

Can Absinthe be bought in a liquor store? Is it any good? I heard that if it is not made right, it is poison. Even more so than alcohol, ha ha. I saw on Modern Marvels where this guy made it using an old recipe, but he used something other than wormwood I think and so yeah, that may keep it from being hallucinogenic. He was heavily regulated though. Can't remember if it was in the U.S., but I wouldn't be surprised if you could get it here, ya know like Cubans. Cigars that is.

nickipettis replied: "not in the US."

Gary D replied: "It's not available in America. Absinthe is a liquor distilled from wormwood and is considered dangerously hallucinogenic. it is, however available in some (VERY few) locations in Paris, France and probably in the countryside of France as well."

Red_F replied: "Not legal in the USA."

Mr. Zwink replied: "it can be bought in a liquor store in the netherlands. i think ti is still banned in the us. and GOD IS IT NASTY. i drank it once, and it soooo fucking disgusting im never buying it again. i didnt even halucinate either, and i drank the entire bottle. it tastse like mint. very strongly."

mrphaka replied: "here in the uk you can get it!"

col. trigga replied: "my friend brought back some from paris and we got pretty drunk off it. no hallucinations though. I think you could trick yourself into thinking you were hallucinating if you were drunk enough."

ahen411 replied: "no it can't...i got mine from canada....its pretty sick, but you have to have alot of it....i recomended taking shots of it with sugar...goodluck"

zachinz replied: "Traditional absinthe, which has higher than allowed levels of a substance called thujone, is banned in the US. Contrary to popular belief, thujone does not cause hallucinations. You could try to import absinthe from another country, though there is a chance that it might be seized. You wouldn't be in trouble, but they'd take your absinthe. There are absinthes that are legal in the United States however. There is one brand called Lucid, which is legal in the United States because its thujone levels are below the regulated level. It is only sold in New York and New Jersey, though it can be bought online. There is another brand that the government has approved for import. It is called Kübler, and is made in Switzerland. There are also other drinks made from wormwood like Malört or Absente which are legal, though they are not true absinthes."

natsaprass replied: "It can be dangerous if it's not made right (I don't know about poison, but it probably would depend on the person and the situation). No, you can't buy the real thing at a liquor store in the U.S., but you can order it online from outside of the country. I don't have a web site to recommend, but you can do a Yahoo search and find places through there. For some reason that is legal. My fiance's friend ordered a bottle and brought it over to our house...I tried to take a tiny shot of it and I immediately threw up (and I am not a lightweight)! My next door neighbor, also no lightweight, yeah he did the same thing. Well, you aren't supposed to drink it straight. Check out the websites that the previous answerer left (Wikepedia) for how to enjoy it. One day I would like to try it again, the right way, with the sugar..."

bambi j replied: "no evidence shows it to be any more dangerous or psychoactive than ordinary alcohol, however, it is not easily obtained in the USA as it is not sold over the counter in this country."

I drank absinthe last night that a friendbought at a liquor store in NC. I had one shot. Any permanent damage? 18 years old, worried about the effects of absinthe I did not hallucinate.

...oioi... replied: "I drank absinthe last night aswell and im 16. what's the big deal?"

richard k replied: "You did not drink enough."

Digger replied: "Some folk take differently to drink. But, there are a lot of horror stories out there regarding Absinth(e). Some of them are TRUE, and can drop a healthy person should they not take to it. However, everything in moderation, and don't drink it to be cool, to await what happens - some turn phsyco, and others fall straight asleep. Some fight the world and their shadow, and some never wake up from a session. But if I can finish with some serious humour (?), watch how you go, as it can be addictive stuff...There is a lot of truth that Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder! Groan!"

repo_mans_wife replied: "You didn't drink real Absinthe, because it's banned from being sold in liquor stores in the United States. "

dekizmaj replied: "lol, nothing will happen to u,its just 1 shot"

jpiepenbrok replied: "Real absinthe IS sold in the US. You cannot get permanent damage from 1 shot of any liquor. Of course you didn't hallucinate. It's a myth that absinthe causes hallucinations. It's been romanticized for the decades it was illegal in the US... and it was illegal because people were ignorant (and still are) and believed every rumor they heard."

Absinthe in Liquor stores near southern Indiana or Louisville, Ky? Can anyone tell me where I can find absinthe in Liquor stores in southern, In or Louisville, Ky. I usually get it at home in Va however I am visiting a friend and he's never had it. So I would really appreciate it if someone told me the name of a liquor store that had it so I could introduce him to it :) and what state it's in. thank you in advance!

kyguy30 replied: "I'm about 2 hours away from louisville ky, but I have bought it around my area. I've seen it in liquor stores in owensboro ky and evansville IN. So surely a bigger area like louisville should have it in thier stores. The brand i bought is called Lucid, and i got it for around 68 or so bucks. It was a set; the bottle of absinthe, 2 absinthe glasses and one slotted spoon. Hope that helps you out some. sorry i wasn't able to give a store name in your area."

TexHabsfan replied: "call around and ask"

Unenlightened replied: "The Keg in Clarksville has it at around $60 a fifth. Al's Liquors has it on 10th street in Jeffersonville, I think for about the same price. I think they're both Lucid. I'm too busy buying Karkov & Steel Reserve to know what Lucid's like. (That is, if you'll be in the Louisville, KY area. Both stores aren't much further than a couple miles over the bridge.) P.S. Like the first poster said, both of the ones I saw were in a boxed gift set."

Absinthe? Whats the best I can get at an average liquor store? and how much.....any tips helpful To the first post..It is legal now... and to the second I am legal...22 just have not been able to find it in the states yet, dont really wanna buy it online U.S is LEGAL now

Ivanv06 replied: "Here in the U.S.A absinthe is illegal. They may have some knockoff type absinthe name alcohols...Why would you drink that anyway it taste like rubbing alcohol and looks like bile.Bacardi 101 taste like petrol/alcohol as well and is legal here in the states if you want some "Hard" hard liqour.Your better off buying some quality liqour and taking shots/making strong drinks. If you are legal to drink ; ) (lol)"

Safÿre replied: "Firstly, you probably won't find Absinthe at your *average* liquor store. My favourite is Diable (think that's the spelling) which is Czech Absinthe. I believe the distiller is Stromu. As for price - here in Australia, it's around AU$80 a bottle. Personally, I don't recommend Pernod Absinthe. It's more Pastis than Absinthe. And I'm not particularly fond of Le Fee Parisien. Czech Absinthe is (IMO) the best. EDIT: The spelling is Dábel - it has this red vampire-looking creature on the front. Oh - and I drink it neat. So I really don't care for louching with sugary water. I prefer sipping the smooth liquor straight."

MasterPython replied: "Not your average neighborhood liquor store. You will probably have to check some of the more upscale ones. Phone around first, if they don't have it they might know who does. The Czech stuff is not the same and the French stuff. It does no "louch" or get milky with water."

Ben replied: "go to there you can order all the absinthe u want from other countries and its mailed to u... ive done it about 3 or 4 times and i live in america... all the real good stuff is there... i just read it again and i see you don't wanna order it... but the only way to get the real stuff is to import it from another country... the stuff they have here doesn't use the wormwood which makes it have the "trippy" effects... oh and also it tastes like liquorish..."

minnesota_cold replied: "Yes, in the US absinthe is legal now, but unfortunately through the strict regulations of our government, we get the watered down version. There isn't as much wormwood as the stuff you can get outside of the US. Fortunately for you, wormwood isn't all that it is cracked up to be. There is one I tried called "Lucid". It is 62% alcohol and cost about $65 for a 750ml. Honestly, it's not worth your money. The taste of black licorice is overpowering. Even if you drink Jagermeister, you won't be prepared for it. If you really want to try it, I know there is another absinthe called "Absente" which comes in a 200ml. It is only 35% alcohol and on the back in quotes, it says it's made with "southern wormwood" which might be something completely different, but it only costs $7. You'll be able to get a good idea if you want to try the stronger stuff at least."

Batgirl replied: "A version of absinthe is legal in the US and must comply with a number of Federal Govt., regulations, one being that it tests "thujone free" I recommend St George Absinthe "

stee1jim replied: "It is legal now in the us but the thujone content is next to none. It would be in your interest to get it online from a quality site. The stuff you might be able to get in the US will pale in comparison to anything you get overseas. This answer has been chosen as best answer a few times so I'll post it again. Should answer your question and give a little more info as well. Is Absinthe Dangerous? Absinthe is highly alcoholic and should be enjoyed sensibly as with any other liquor. Historically it had a reputation for being dangerous, mainly due to cheap absinthes made with poor quality Alcohol . Modern production techniques mean that it is no longer dangerous. I'd be VERY wary of any kind of home made absinthe though. If you want REAL absinthe, check out eabsinthe.com I've ordered from them before and it's a quality site with fast shipping. Always get it within a few days, from the UK to Wisconsin! Never a problem. I like the Reality (Czech)-just right-nice herbal flavor I've tried the Versinthe La Blanche (French)-thought anise(licorice) was too strong-and the Abisinthe Amer (French)-alcohol a little overpowering. High wormwood (thujone) content is what you're looking for. Alcohol level can be anywhere between 80-160 proof. If you want high alcohol content, just mix up some Bacardi 151 and coke. You mix absinthe with water and sugar, and a high alcohol content wont make for a smooth drink. Your pretty much drinking watered down shots. And even with water, it's hard to make 160 proof smooth. As far as hallucinating and it being illegal......more of a novelty thing really. You're not going to see anything that isnt there. But a noticeable extra tingle with your buzz. They say it "makes the heart grow fonder". Fun with that special someone if you know what I mean. If you actually hallucinated from this, you wouldn't be able to get near this stuff. It is illegal to SELL absinthe but not so much to possess it. Absinthe recently became legal in the Canadian province of British Columbia. In the US, thujone is still banned, but as a food rather than a drug. You aren't allowed to distill or commercially make absinthe, but you can legally own a bottle and even make your own as long as it isn't distilled. As far as spelling... Why is absinthe sometimes spelt without an 'e'? This is quite simply a language difference. Although 'absinthe' is the generic spelling as coined by the Swiss and French, who were the original absinthe producing nations, you will find that around the world there are many different spellings for the word absinthe. In the Czech Republic 'e' is dropped, and thus, absinth. The Spanish say absenta and the Italians say assenzio, but they all mean absinthe. It is worth noting that the spelling absinth (without an 'e') usually denotes that the brand comes from Eastern Europe and is likely to be Czech style', which means that it is unlikely to louche (turn cloudy) when water is added, due to the little to no anise used compared to the traditional Swiss/French style. Don't forget to buy a spoon too."

zeek replied: "Yes, absinthe is legal in the U.S. now, as of May 2007 actually. The law says that absinthe may only be manufactured and distributed as long as it is thujone-free----which, they redefined as equal to or less than 10 parts per million, or 10mg/kg. They determine the thujone content with spectro--? something tests. Thujone is the main active ingrediant in the herb Grande Wormwood (Artemisia absthinthiam or something like that, which is where the term "absinthe" comes from) Wormwood is one of three of the main ingredients in absinthe, the other two being anise and fennel, though a couple other herbs can be used as well, with the first three being the most common. Thujone is a neurotoxin at high doses, so the FDA kinda dislikes it. But, with the regulated 10 ppm, you'd die from alcohol poisoning a coulpe of times over before you would die from the thujone content in US regulated absinthe. Alot of poeple think that what we can buy now is "watered-down" absinthe. This is false. Scientists use the same tests that the government use to determine the now-legal absinthe's thujone content on vintage absinthe from the pre-ban eras from spain, france, etc etc, and found that the thujone content is very similar. In fact, most of the pre-ban absinthes will pass today's US regulations. SO back to your question. Though absinthe is legal in the usa now, its not very prominant. you won't have many varieties, so your choices are limited to pretty much two, as far as i know. The first, available in virginia now, near the hamptons, va beach, bristol, some other places too, im not sure, is called Kubler, correctly spelled with the two dots over the 'u.' Though its only available in 60 out of 330 ABC stores in virginia, or something like that. The second, called Lucid, is available in many states and some restaurants and bars in those states. It is currently not available in virginia, but i'm sure it will be soon. Both run at about $60 per 1 liter bottle, and they only offer it in 1 liter bottles right now. The Kubler absinthe is clear, as not all absinthes are green. Im not sure as to the color of the Lucid absinthe... Anyways, check out these sites and stuff, all you could ever need to know about absinthe is located on these sites... A FEW NOTES: Absente is from "southern wormwood" which is not artemisia abstinthiam or whatever... so it has no thujone, so pretty much its not traditionally genuine absinthe. Also, i may be wrong about the price of Lucid, i forgot what it was but im not too far off, if at all. Thirdly, stay away from online vendors who try and sell their absinthe with the pitch of higher thujone levels. Absinthe is NOT a hallucinogenic beverage. You will not hallucinate from it, jsut like you will not hallucinate from plain beer or vodka. Absinthe really isn't that different from any schnapps or other spirit, its typically very high in alcohol content. There are many reports though, that absinthe does have some very minor secondary effects, explained to be a more clear-headed or lucid (which is where i think the makers of "lucid" got the idea of their name from..) type drunk. which could be because some of the herbs in the absinthe also have stimulant effects, as well as other sedative effects, albeit subtle. Main point, you don't trip on absinthe, at least not psychedelically."

What brands of absinthe do your local liquor stores carry? I ask hundreds of people this question each month already, but I thought perhaps I could get a good batch of responses by asking this as a poll question. If you could, please include your state and city for reference purposes. Thanks to all who contribute!:) If you have any questions regarding absinthe, please feel free to e-mail me:

Are there any liquor store in Manila that sells ABSINTHE? A friend of mine bought me a bottle of Absinthe from France. I didn't know much about the beverage before. I enjoyed the whole bottle, little did I know about it's hallucinating effects and the number of famous writers and artist that died of it. I wanna buy another one of it. I hear it's not illegal here in the Philippines and it is being sold over the counter. I just want to know where I can find a store that sells this notorious beverage. If you wanna know more about Absinthe... Here's a link. Thank you...

Harvey Garcia replied: "I am guessing no since your IP traces back to Arizona"

arose replied: "Absinthe is illegal in most of the UK and all of the US. You can find stores with it in Greece, Amsterdam and Ukraine."

Jeff W replied: "You may have to travel to Olongapo to buy absinthe, but it's worth the trip. It's a powerful aphrodisiac or maybe you didn't know that "Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder.""

JOHN JOERIC N replied: "well, i am just a kid but i know and tasted a little bit of that liquor and i am from Cebu but if Cebu has it why can't manila? i think you should search the s.m malls maybe you'll just have the jackpot of finding it try also save more markets maybe they have one:D"

Does anyone know which liquor stores in Colorado sell Lucid Absinthe? I live in Longmont so somewhere in that area would be helpful. Thank you!

Mayor Adam West replied: "It is a really common liquor so I would imagine that almost all of them do... At least the ones that are worth there salt anyway."

cactusone replied: "it was outlawed in the states for years....maybe that changes recently"
